Chapter 3

A week passed and when Monica left to fetch them some breakfast, Scully showered and changed before using her laptop. John was coming over to meet them shortly. Each day she awaited Mulder's reply or some sort of indication that he had received her e-mail. As the baby slept soundly in his bassinet, she logged onto the internet. She took a breath and looked over at her sleeping baby and gently caressed his chubby cheeks. At her touch, he opened his eyes and looked back at his mother. Sucking his pacifier, he made a small noise. Scully smiled. "It's okay, little William," she whispered, now smoothing her fingers over his little fists.

She looked back to her computer screen as her e-mail popped up. She held her breath in anticipation until she recognized that familiar name and message pop up in her inbox. Her heart rate increased as she clicked on the message.

'Dearest Dana,

I am deathly saddened to say the word about William got to me shortly before yours did. I cannot tell you how or whom, but only of my regrets for not being able to protect you both. I am concerned, not for myself, but for you and for William. I know they want me dead, Dana, either me or William. I won't let them take William, but I cannot let him fall into their hands either given their prophecy.'

Tears welled in Scully's eyes as she read on. 'I know it's probably not safe and I'd be risking my life, but I need to see you and William too. I need to see for myself that you both are okay and to hear what you have to tell me. Meet me at the place of a lone gunman, tonight at 10pm. I cannot wait to see you, and William. For sure this time.'

Forever yours,

Mulder

Tears began to fall down her cheeks and she jumped when she heard the door unlock and the voices of John and Monica follow. She breathed a sigh of relief and closed her laptop. She looked down the swell of her stomach. She was four months pregnant and although her stomach wasn't big yet, she was definitely starting to show. Other than Monica and her mother, no one else knew of her pregnancy, but she knew the time would come very soon when she'd have to tell John. After all he had done for her, he deserved to know. She'd put John in enough danger and this time around, he had a right to know why he was getting himself into it. Absently, Scully smoothed her hand over the taught skin of her rounded abdomen before buttoning her jacket over the evidence. She wouldn't be able to hide it too much longer. When she heard Monica call out her name, she picked up William from his bassinet and made her way into the living room.

Doggett studied her as she hastily made her way into the living room carrying William. Something had obviously happened while they were gone and Scully knew she wouldn't be able to keep it from them.

"Agent Scully…Dana, is there something wrong?" Doggett asked.

Scully was breathing hard and she looked over at William as if that would help alleviate the stress of what she was going to say next. She suddenly felt both anxious and overwhelmed and as tears filled her eyes, she kissed the boy's head.

"Dana?" Reyes prodded gently.

Scully slowly looked away from her son's face and in John and Monica's direction. "It's Mulder," she whispered.

Monica and John looked at one another and then back at Scully. "What do you mean, Dana? Did something happen?"

Scully took a deep breath to calm herself as she continued. "I heard from him this morning…we're meeting him tonight."

John took a moment to let this news sink in. "So, he's not dead like everyone thinks he is. Dana, do you know how dangerous it would be for him to surface right now, how much risk you'd be taking? Remember what happened when you tried to meet with him a few months ago? All of your lives will be jeopardized!"

"I have to see him, John!" she said in a pleading whisper. William let out a small whimper as the three continued.

"Why now, Dana? What's changed?"

Scully averted his questioning gaze and Monica looked away from them both.

John's gaze went from Scully to Monica and then back again to Scully. "What?" he questioned.

"What aren't you telling me; is there something I'm missing here?"

Scully held on tightly to William and forced herself to keep the tears at bay. "I'm pregnant, John."

Monica slowly looked over at John as he took in the news. John looked from Scully to Monica. "My god, you knew about this?"

Monica said nothing as Scully continued. "She and my mother are the only ones who know, John. I don't want to put any of your lives in danger even more than I already have," she insisted.

John sighed. "We're not letting you go alone."

Scully opened her mouth to object, but was quickly silenced by Monica's input. "We'll follow you. If anything should go wrong, we'll be there," she said.

"I don't want to put any of your lives in danger, I couldn't live with myself if-"

"Don't worry about us, Dana. We're big boys and girls now. Just worry about yourself and your family, we'll be fine." John managed a smile.

Later that night, Scully felt her heart racing as time crept closer to her meeting with Mulder. In fact, she had been more than anxious all day. She couldn't stand it. She had come so close to seeing him just a few months ago, and was afraid that this chance would also be ripped away from her.

Scully watched William struggle as she put on his little jacket and if she wasn't mistaken, she could swear he was sensing her anxiety as well. He began to wimper. "Shh, sweetie. We're going to see your daddy soon, okay?" she cooed.

William only continued to struggle as she put on his bunny head cap and little mitts on his hands. Scully stopped suddenly as she felt a sudden flutter of movement within her abdomen. She gasped and placed a hand to the swell of her stomach. This was the first time in four months she felt any sort of movement from the baby within. Not that she expected to feel anything before the fourth month. She was just glad the first trimester was over and that she was experiencing less nausea. Tears welled in her eyes and feelings of happiness and fear washed over her at the same time.

She loved being a mother, but continued questioning her ability to protect her children. Would this child be like William? Or would he or she be normal? And how would Mulder react? She hated herself for thinking of alternative choices and with each month that passed by and with each movement she felt, she felt closer and closer to her second baby. As much fear she carried about her ability to protect her children, it would also tear her apart if she made any other choice but to have the baby. Mulder had the right to know about this child first.

Once William was all bundled up, she handed the baby to Monica and found a large winter coat that would keep her and the child within nice and warm. If she weren't pregnant, she more than likely would have raced out into the night as is. She kept eyeing her watch as she hurriedly dressed. Monica and John had been waiting in the living room when she reappeared. "Ready?" she asked anxiously.

Monica and John who were both seated at the couch, turned and looked at Scully. Doggett wore a look of concern on his face.

"Agent Doggett?" she questioned.

Doggett swallowed as he stood up from the couch. "Yeah," he said tentatively.

Scully was almost shaking with anxiety as she approached the door. Monica picked up William and they followed her to the door. "Are you alright, Dana?" she whispered.

"I'll be okay once I see him," Scully said as she opened the door for them to pass first. Monica looked over at John before they left the apartment with Scully.

They hurried downstairs and into the chilly winter night. Monica placed William inside of his car seat in Scully's car along with a bag of baby supplies, if needed. It was going to be a long night.

"We'll be right behind you," Doggett said once Monica closed the back door.

Scully tensed as she remembered those being Doggett's last words before he ended up in a coma after being hit by a car. He must have sensed the tension as he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It's going to be alright, okay Dana?"

Scully managed a small smile as they started to walk away. "Yeah," she whispered.

She watched them until they were inside of their car, which was parked nearby before getting into her own. Scully quickly pulled out of the driveway once she saw that they were right behind her. William began to cry and she knew he was just as anxious as she was to see his daddy.

"It's going to be okay William, it's going to be okay," she repeated as if suddenly in a trance. She was on a mission to see Mulder and nothing was going to stop her until she saw him.

About fifteen minutes later, she neared the lone gunmen headquarters with Doggett and Reyes close behind. She pulled her car into the alley and waited until they pulled up right behind her before getting out of the car. Her hands were shaking so much that she had difficulty removing the keys from the ignition and getting William out of his car seat. Once she closed the door she looked over at Doggett and Reyes who nodded.

Scully swallowed hard as she made her way to the entrance of the lone gunmen's headquarters. As anxious as she had been, she paused before ringing the doorbell. She looked over at William, his bright blue eyes staring back at her. He cooed. Scully smiled as she kissed his forehead. She rang the doorbell and a minute later, after unlatching more than a dozen locks, the door opened and Frohike appeared. "Hi," she whispered.

"Hi," he returned, moving out of the way so she could step in. If their meeting would have been under any other circumstances, she knew his greeting would have been much more obnoxious. As he closed the door, Scully moved further into the room to see Langly and then Byers who smiled and nodded. She breathed slowly and when she didn't see the person she so desperately wanted to see, she turned to look over at them questionably when she saw a tall silhouette standing at the entrance to one of the furthest rooms.

Tears welled in her eyes as she saw the figure retreat into the room to afford them some privacy. The room was dark and all she could hear was movement of feet. The gunmen stayed behind as she walked down the hall to the room. With her free arm, she closed the door behind her. There was a small lamp that illuminated a small section of the room, but the person she came to see stood in the darkness. "Mulder?" she finally whispered hoarsely.

A moment later, she heard footsteps near her and she gasped as she figure neared the light. He flipped the light switch. Her knees began to buckle on instinct and if she weren't holding William, she would have collapsed to the floor. She was shaking uncontrollably now.

Mulder looked disheveled as if this was the first time in months that he had faced society. His face unshaven and his clothes were tattered. His eyes held no light, as if he'd been in the darkness too long. "Oh, Mulder," she whispered, tears now streaking her face.

Mulder took William from her, studied him for a moment and gently placed him into a crib nearby. She hadn't expected him to be prepared. Immediately, he pulled her into a tight embrace and she allowed herself to melt into his arms. "Oh my god, oh my god," she repeated as heart wrenching sobs wracked through her body.

"It's okay Scully," he finally whispered. "It's okay, I'm here."

A moment later, Scully pulled back and not caring about his disheveled looks, she slipped her hands over the sides of his face and pulled him into a fierce kiss. He eagerly returned the affection as she held onto him tightly for dear life. "I missed you both so much," he whispered into her ear.

"We've missed you too," she whispered. "Oh god, Mulder, everyone thought you were dead and when you didn't respond, I came to believe it too," her voice broke.

"I know," he whispered. "I had to wait until it was safe, but I am here now and it's going to be alright."

They held each other for the longest time until William cried out. Mulder quickly attended to him and held him tightly. William's cries ceased instantly. "My god Scully, he's gotten so much bigger." Mulder kissed the baby's head.

Scully managed a smile through her tears. "Yeah, you're lucky he quiets for you. Sometimes I am unable to comfort him, but I think he just misses his father," she whispered.

Mulder looked up at her. "Is he okay, Scully?"

She knew what he was referring to and she looked away, pain stricken. "Yeah, he's fine Mulder," her voice broke. "I'm sorry that I failed to protect him, it's my fault. I kept looking for answers when I should have just accepted him. Forgive me, Mulder," she collapsed to her knees and held her face in her hands.

She was drowning so much in sorrow that she was only vaguely aware of Mulder kneeling down next to her. "Don't blame yourself, Scully. It's my fault for not being there to protect both of you and for not being able to see this coming sooner." Tears were now making their way down his face as well.

They spent minutes allowing their bodies to get reacquainted with one another. Finally, they pulled apart and sat next to each other on the floor. Mulder was the first to speak. "So, what was this important news you had to tell me?"

Scully looked away momentarily. For the last month, she had so desperately wanted Mulder to know about the pregnancy, now here she was afraid to speak the truth. "Scully," he prodded, reaching to tilt her chin so he could look into her eyes.

Scully blinked back tears. "I'm, uh…I'm pregnant."

Mulder stared at her in shock.

Scully looked away and turned to stand. "I'm sorry," she blurted out. "I know this was probably the last thing you wanted to happen and I even considered plan B if absolutely necessary. I know William was a miracle, but I didn't expect to have two of them."

Mulder reached up to grab her arm, pulling her back next to him. "No, that's not it Scully, and I'd never think of abortion. It's just with everything going on, this is a lot to take in, but I am thrilled. This is a second chance for me to take care of you and see our child grow. I missed out on a lot with William," he explained.

Scully studied him, silent tears still making their way down her face. A moment later, she sighed with relief. "But Mulder, with everything that's happened, how can I guarantee the safety of this child," she started placing her hand to her abdomen.

"I'm going to protect you both and I'm going to make sure nothing happens to any one of you, even if it kills me," he vowed.

Scully suddenly felt a shiver down her spine at those last few words.

Mulder looked down to where her hand rested and silently moved towards her. She moved her hand away so Mulder could see the evidence. Gingerly he placed his hand on the rounded surface. Scully looked down to where his hand was and allowed him to explore the area. He moved his hand in slow circles over the protruding little belly. "You sure are mischievous, Dr. Scully," he grinned, making a light attempt at humor.

Scully managed to laugh for the first time in many months. The warmth of his hand over her abdomen was curing and she wanted to savor this moment forever as for fear of never having it again. She smiled and placed her hands over his.

"Do you know the sex," he finally asked.

"No," she whispered. "But we can find out together at my doctor's appointment next month."

Mulder smiled. "I would like that," he whispered pressing the tips of her fingers to his lips.

"I love you, Scully, all of you. I'm not going to let anything bad happen to any of you ever again. I don't want you to have a complicated pregnancy like you did with William, so please, try not to worry for me, okay?" she smoothed a stray hair from her face with his free hand.

Scully closed her eyes and smiled. "Okay and I love you too," she whispered. "We all do," she said looking over at William who was watching them intently.

The special moment between them was suddenly interrupted by several shouts followed by gunshots. Scully gasped and before she had time to think, several more gunshots burst through the small window next to them. Everything was a blur and she could hear Mulder shouting to her to get down and William's now piercing cries. Glass was everywhere and she could feel the weight of Mulder's body shielding her, William and their unborn baby. Her pulse quickened and she was suddenly hyperventilating. The gunshots stopped and all was silent.

"Mulder," she cried. When he didn't respond, she pulled her body out from underneath his. "Mulder, what the hell happened?" she screamed.

William's cries were suddenly deafening. She glanced over at him to make sure he was okay and then pulled herself out from Mulder's protective arms.

Scully could hear Doggett and Reyes calling her name, but the sounds of their voices were suddenly far away as she turned to see blood pooling next to her. "No," she whispered.

She suddenly felt her trembling legs give from beneath her as she neared Mulder's side. She could hear nothing but the droning sound of her frantic heartbeat vibrating within her ears. Everything followed in slow motion. His face was turned away and he lay flat on the hard ground beneath him. "Mulder, are you okay?" She shook his body. Nothing. "Dammit, Mulder, answer me, please!" her cries became desperate. As she neared the left side of his body, the sight before her suddenly sent her mind spinning. The blood was coming from a gunshot wound on the side of his head. She placed her hand gingerly on the side of his face as tears spilled onto her cheeks, dripping onto his face. "No!" she cried. She looked up to the heavens and screamed, "THIS ISN'T HAPPENING! MULDER! NOOO!"
